What is a Yogakaraka planet?

A Yogakaraka is a planet that simultaneously rules both a Kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th — the angular "pillars" of life) and a Trikona house (1st, 5th, or 9th — the houses of fortune and merit) for a given Ascendant. This dual rulership only happens for certain Ascendants — for example, Saturn is Yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra, and Mars for Cancer and Leo. When well-placed and unafflicted, a Yogakaraka's dasha tends to be one of the most fortunate periods of a person's life.
