What exactly is Vastu Shastra?

According to the text Brihat Samhita, Vastu Shastra means a science that establishes harmony between humans, nature, and architecture (dwelling).

In Indian culture, Vastu Shastra holds a highly important place. According to some people, if the negativity in a house is removed, the defects within it are pointed out, and remedies are carried out on them, then it is called Vastu Shastra. But our sages and saints in ancient texts have considered Vastu Shastra as a science that balances humans, nature, and the energy in the universe.

Just as the nine planets in our birth chart exert an influence on our life, in the same way, the energy within the architecture (dwelling) where we reside exerts an influence on our joys-sorrows, on health, on wealth, our financial status, and on our relationships. Therefore, while purchasing a new property, it is necessary to check whether it is appropriate or inappropriate.

Ancient sages and saints have described Vastu Shastra in detail in holy texts. While constructing any building, the direction, selection of land, consideration of planets-constellations, and the balance of the five elements (Panchamahabhootas) have been considered highly important.

From the perspective of astrology, specific planets exert an influence over each direction. The lord of the East direction is considered to be the Sun, while the lord of the West direction is Saturn, the lord of the North direction is Mercury, and the lord of the South direction is Mars. Therefore, if appropriate use of directions is made, we receive the positive energy of the planets. The birth chart is the mirror of our destiny, while the Vastu is the power that supports that destiny.
