Just as a good sleep is necessary for a human being's body, the sleeping direction is also considered equally important. From sleep, our body and mind receive energy that rejuvenates them. There is a famous verse (Shloka) in Vastu Shastra "Dakshina Shirshah Shayeta", which means according to Vastu Shastra, while sleeping, the head should be towards the South direction and the feet should be towards the North direction; this direction is considered the best and most beneficial.
According to Vastu Shastra, the South direction is related to stability, health, and longevity. This being so, if one sleeps keeping the head towards the South direction, the energy in the body remains balanced and one gets deep sleep. The connection of the South direction is linked with Lord Yama. Therefore, sleeping in this direction keeps the mind stable, and mental stress is reduced.
Similarly, the East direction is the direction of the Sun, and we get positive energy from this direction. Since the Sun is a symbol of knowledge and self-confidence, sleeping facing East (head towards East) increases our memory power, concentration, and mental energy. According to Vastu Shastra, sleeping with the head kept towards the North direction should be avoided. Even though the North direction is the direction of Kuber, it is not considered favorable for sleeping. The Earth's magnetic field affects blood circulation, causing mental restlessness if head is North.
Therefore, according to Vastu Shastra, sleeping with the head kept towards the South direction is the best, while the East direction is considered the second alternative.
