How is the right gemstone for a person actually determined?

A gemstone recommendation is never made from the Ascendant alone. An astrologer looks at which planet is weak, afflicted, or otherwise in need of support; whether that planet is a natural benefic or functional malefic for the specific Ascendant; the planet's house lordship; and the person's current or upcoming dasha period. A stone recommended without this full analysis can end up strengthening a planet that was better left unsupported for that particular chart.
